S4 E4 “First Impressions”

S4 E4 “First Impressions” Dwight is worried when a new Reverend for the Good Shepard Church comes into town. As the town gets angrier than usual, Audrey is distracted when she runs into James.

Previously on Haven;

The small town of Haven Maine is home to people with troubles, supernatural abilities that they can not control. Former FBI Agent, Audrey Parker turned Detective, and her partner Nathan Warnous help the troubled and save the town from the fallout of these abilities. And in their three years working together they have fallen in love, but things are complicated...

Reverend Driscoll declared war against the troubled, riling up the church congregation to kill troubled people for him. Yet to protect a teenage girl, who the Rev. was going to kill, Audrey killed the Rev. instead. (S2 E10 of the Original Show on Syfy)

Dwight, the new Police chief belonged to a group called the guard, a group of troubled people who protect those who are troubled. Dwight's trouble is that he's a bullet magnet. (S2 Original)

Audrey and Nathan have a son, James, who was born in the 1960s after Nathan, caught in a time-travel trouble, ended up with Sarah, who Audrey was in 1960s Haven (S3E9 Original). James was tragically killed in the 80s so Lucy, who Audrey was in the 80s left him in the supernatural place called "the barn" to heal. But when the barn returned a few months ago, he was stabbed by his serial killer wife. Agent Howard, the keeper of the barn, said it was where he belonged and revealed to Audrey, she could stop the troubles if she killed someone she loved. (S3E13 Original) Audrey wasn't sure what to do but knew she had to kill Nathan, so she shot him in the head. But then Nathan rose from the dead and can now cure people of their troubles...But he still has his trouble, he still can't feel (which he inherited from his father). And he doesn’t remember his life with Audrey or his love for her. He only remembers up through college. Audrey wishes he would remember her, remember how much they cared for each other. (S3E13 Rewrites) And she has a bad feeling, something very bad is coming. This is confirmed when someone is murdered, with a fan mark on her body. Audrey knows that symbol, it's from a past life, and it terrifies her.
Teaser

In front of the police station, Nathan is flirting with some attractive women. He brags about how he's a detective on the force. Audrey sighed, not pleased. But she passes by him on her way inside.
Audrey enters the chief’s office. She was summoned. In the chief’s office, Dwight tells Audrey that a new Reverend is coming for the Good Shepard Church and the guard is worried, he’s worried. The Reverend had the most power in this town and used it against the troubled. Vince and Dave can’t seem to find any information on him. “Really that’s not like them?” Audrey says, “They couldn’t blackmail any of the congregation.” “The church is being really tight-lipped about it,” Dwight says. “Check it out for me.” She reminds him she killed Reverend Driscoll. Dwight says, "that makes it more important for you to go and play nice." She objects saying she should take the trouble cases. He tells her to go, the guard wants to check this Sam Lewis out. “It is Sunday so go to the service and be nice. Let me know if he’s a threat.” Audrey comments, “If I’m going to go, I’m getting real coffee on the way.”

A woman is upset her husband is making him late to church again, it’s the Reverend’s first day they don’t want to be late. They bicker, and the china sitting in the cabinet inexplicably rattles.

Audrey walks up to Joe’s coffee and sees James, her son. He is serving coffee. Surprised to see him she calls him by name. He asks her if she knows him--he doesn’t remember her or his life, and he wants to know who he is. Audrey pauses unsure what to say. She'll sound crazy if she tells a man who looks around the same age as her that she's his mother.  And it will be even worst to tell him she left when he was a baby, then he was murdered mysteriously over 20 years ago, and killed again just a few months ago by his serial killer wife and is somehow back...so instead she says, “I knew your mother.” When his boss tells him to get back to work, he asks her to come back after the lunch rush. She agrees. She stares at him as he goes. Then her phone rings, Nathan is waiting for her.

Audrey and Nathan drive up to the church. They get out of the car both dreading going inside. They walk into the service. People stare at them upset. A tall young woman with a feminine muscular build and silver blond hair welcomes them by name. The same woman goes up to the pulpit and begins introductions, thanking everyone for being there. Sam, the new Reverend is a woman.

Act I

As Sam preaches her first Sermon starting with, “There was a great man in the eyes of God who took up violence in God’s name. He knew the word of God, the Torah, and people were corrupting it. So he pulled these people from their houses and stoned them.” This makes Audrey nervous. She's worried that Sam will incite the townspeople to take up violence against the trouble like Rev. Driscoll did. Sam continues, “Then this man met Jesus on the road to Damascus. He stopped killing. Instead, he preached. He preached words of community. That is what we know him best for. That’s when he became a great man of God. This was Paul’s journey. In his letter to the Romans, a city of pagans, he addresses them as a friend. I am going to read Romans Chapter 1:8-15.

Dwight is called to a crime scene where there’s another murder, the death of another person, with the fan mark on his body. Officer Stan asks if he should call Audrey. Dwight says, she can wait, this isn’t going anywhere and tells them to process the scene saying, “We need to find a connection between these victims.”
Back at the Church Sam ends her Sermon, saying; “Paul was a murderer of Christians, of humans, all of which are made in the image of God. Yet he was forgiven. And God used Paul to share his message of love. None of us come to God perfect, without any regrets. I certainly don't. But the good news of the Gospel is with God we can all be forgiven. We can serve God like Paul did by being in community, talking with people, caring for them. We can do this strengthened by the Holy Spirit. Let it fill you, listen to the Spirit, pray without ceasing, as Paul did. I will, knowing like Paul, we are obligated to the Greek as well as the barbarian. Obliged to those who are normal as well as those who are troubled.”

Sitting in a pew Nathan, who is normally very emotionless, is crying tears of joy. The room is still. Some people nod, tears stream down their cheeks, some are angry. It makes Audrey uncomfortable. Sam announces the next hymn, Amazing Grace. They begin to sing “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound.” The tears of the congregation continue.

Afterward, outside the church Audrey asks Nathan to keep an eye out as she stands in the line to talk to Sam. Nathan walks around. Audrey witnesses Sam’s interactions with the parishioners. One of the parishioners is grateful she came, saying “that was wonderful. Thank you for your persistence in begging us to hire you”. Sam chuckles tears in her eyes, “you’re welcome.” Some of the parishioners are extremely pleased feeling guilty for their actions. She gives them an immense amount of grace. To the side some parishioners are not happy, they argue. Led by the woman who was almost late, the angry group goes to the Reverend. She yells at the Reverend about how inappropriate that was, the troubled are God forsaken and don’t deserve God. Sam confronts her, “None of us deserve him that's what's so wonderful about God.” The woman argues, “you can’t let them in here.” The woman says pointing to Audrey and Nathan. Audrey places her hand on her gun, preparing herself. “They killed Reverend Driscoll?” A man shouts. Sam interrupts, “Reverend Driscoll was not a perfect man, he lost his way, forgot he was bound by the law just like everyone here.” As Sam speaks people listen, “God is God of all, since there is only one God, and anyone who comes to God or this church is welcomed with their faith.” The group upset stands angrily. Sam looks to them with compassion, “You too are loved. I encourage you to mingle with those here and praise God’s forgiving love together.” Some of them leave, but the angry woman keeps her eye on the Reverend. Her husband comes over and tries to get her to come. Someone utters under their breath, “that’s what happens with a woman Reverend.” The wife pulls her hand from her husband angry and storms off. To the side, they share bitter words.

Nathan continues to walk around flirting with girls, who say they always thought he was cute, “but Reverend Driscoll wouldn't have it" Audrey sighs annoyed as she waits in the greeting line to talk to Sam.

Duke at his Resturant, the Gull by the docks, overlooks things and notices there are a lot of cancelations for that night. The hostess explains there’s a big thing going on at the church apparently it’s going to be good. Duke’s disappointed saying the place will be empty. The hostess asks if they should just close, but he says, “no leave it open – just in case.”

At the Church, Nathan goes into the car with the pretty girls and Audrey says, “so much for having my back.” Just then Audrey makes her way to the head of the greeting line. Audrey complements Sam on the message. Sam thanks Audrey, by name, and offers her assistance if she can ever help with things. Audrey, taken back by this forwardness, asks Sam how she knew about the troubles. Sam’s explains, “My father grew up in Haven. Told me stories so I would never come back, but they’re my people, and I couldn’t leave them without a Shepherd, so when I heard about the death of Reverend Driscoll, I begged them to hire me. It took a while but…” Sam leans in and whispers, “No one else wanted the job. I wonder why.” Audrey chuckles. She knows it's because the town has too many deaths in a small town in Maine. Just then the woman who made the fuss, her husband punches another man. Sam goes to break it up, and they turn on her. She’s knocked down.

Act II

Audrey and Sam break up the fight. Sam has a gash by her eye. A church member who is a paramedic offers to clean it.

Inside the church, the paramedic patches Sam up. Audrey sits by her telling her, “she appreciates what she’s trying to do, but she has made enemies.” “I’m not here to make friends.” She says, “Just speak Truth.” “I’m going to put an officer on you,” Audrey says. Sam refuses. “No, if you haven’t noticed they don’t like cops. It’ll make me unapproachable.” Audrey insists, “You’re not safe.” “It doesn’t matter,” Sam says. But Audrey doesn’t feel comfortable leaving her, she sighs, “okay, let me make a call.” She goes to call Duke and asks him to watch her saying a beautiful newcomer, a young woman is in danger and needs his protection. Duke agrees--he doesn’t have anything better to do.

Audrey comes back to Sam, “I asked Duke Crocker to come by and check on you.” “Shadow me, you mean?” Sam says. Audrey confirms this and Sam says, “That will do, thank you.”  Audrey continues saying, “You could save him,” adding, “you know from hell.” Sam turns to her, “I don’t save people,” Sam says. Audrey's shocked, “What?” Sam nods, “I teach people that if we depend on God’s guidance we can save the world, isn’t that what you do, save the world every time you speak with a troubled person about their trouble.” Taken back Audrey nods, “Yeah,” she says. Sam continues, “Well if you ever need an ear, I’m here.” Audrey is impressed and thanks her.  She sits in the pew and Sam sits beside her.
Meanwhile at the police station the phone rings. Dwight sends Stan out on a domestic disturbance call.

Duke walks up to the church. He arrives and sees Audrey and Sam are talking, “Then I found out he was my son and Nathan’s son.” Duke enters, the women stop talking. Duke interrupts, “So, I’m here. Where do you need me?” He sees Sam and smiles, “Oh I do hope you’re the pretty woman I’m here to protect.” He smiles at her. She smiles back and says, “You can call me Sam.” An older woman comes up to Sam calls her “Reverend Lewis” Duke shocked says, “Reverend?” questioning it. She’s too hot to be a Reverend. Sam says “Yes. I’m the New Reverend. Sam Lewis.” and she looks to the other woman. Duke looks at Audrey, annoyed. Audrey smirks--yes she tricked him, but it wasn't exactly a lie. The older woman continues, asking Sam if she can help with the heavier boxes. Sam agrees and offers Duke’s services. Audrey smiling gleefully thanks him. He reluctantly follows Sam.

On her way back to the station Audrey’s on the phone with Dwight, who is at the police station. Audrey tells him that Sam is alright, I think the guard will like her. Dwight is surprised it’s a she. Audrey feeling vulnerable says, “I shared way too much with her. I think she can make anyone do anything.” Dwight is worried about Audrey asks if she’s alright. “Yeah.” She says, “Yeah um. She’s actually pulling for everyone to get along.” Dwight’s happy about that, says he’ll let Vince know it’s a she. “Maybe that’s why they couldn’t get information on her.” Audrey tells Dwight, “there’s something else...James is in town.” Dwight is speechless. Audrey asks for the rest of the day off. Dwight gives it to her gladly.

In the church Duke and Sam actually get along pretty well as they set up tables. He thinks she’s tough for how much a beating she took when he sees the cut on her face. She shares stories about backpacking through Europe and being imprisoned in China.

Vince and Dave, two older men/bickering brothers are also checking up on the Reverend, and they’ve discovered that she was imprisoned in China, there she was able to cast out evil spirits and apparently worked miracles and made a miraculous escape. Dave chuckles saying we could certainly use some of that here. They are pleased with her. They want to do an expose on her.

Just then Audrey enters the Harold, nervous about talking to James. They are surprised he’s in town. But she’s more nervous. She asks the guys for advice.

The phones are ringing like crazy at the police station. People are angry. It’s a bunch of domestic dispute calls. Dwight knows a trouble has to be involved and asks to get Nathan in there. He doesn’t want to bother Audrey.

Nathan sits in the Haven country club with the church girls having brunch. He’s bored.

At Joe’s coffee, Audrey approaches James, it’s awkward. She orders a coffee from the waitress. She doesn’t know what to say to James. He breaks the silence; “I’m sorry if I don’t remember you, I woke up one morning and I couldn’t remember my life. The doctors insist I was in an accident.” Like a concerned mother, Audrey asks, “What happened?”. He says, “I don’t know, but there was a gash in my side when I was found.” As the coffee comes, Audrey asks, “So how did you end up in Haven?” When James says, his boss recommended it Audrey questions. He has a boss? James explains he worked on website design, “but I don’t know how to do it now so…” As she takes the coffee to her lips, she asks if he was ever married “No.” He says. Audrey pulls down the coffee, it’s too hot to drink. When Audrey asks if she can meet his boss, James says, “Sure, he’s coming this afternoon.” Audrey's so surprised she spills her coffee all over his hand. But though it's scalding, he doesn’t feel it. “You can’t feel pain?” she says. “No,” he says, “after the accident I couldn’t feel anything. They say it will never come back, but I’m getting used to-.” Just then agent Howard shows up, and James introduces him as his boss, “Stephen, Stephen King from Jersey.” It's Audrey's Agent Howard the keeper of the magical place called "the barn."

Act III

In the coffee shop, Audrey stares at James’ boss--a man she knows under a different name when a physical fight breaks out at the register. James goes over to help. When James is gone, Audrey says to the man she knows as Howard, “What are you doing?” He responds, “Isn’t this what you wanted, him to have a life.” “Yes,” Audrey argues, “but you said that the barn was his home.” He nods and offers a caveat, “until you shot Nathan, your sacrifice changed everything.” Audrey questions demanding to know, “What did you do to Nathan? Will he ever remember? How does he cure people?” Howard calmly replies, “I cannot give you all the answers, any more than I could tell you that Nathan would rise, you needed to believe he would die, be willing to lose him for things to work. This path is a process, not a destination.” James then gets back, “Sorry.” James apologizes for being gone, “I’ve been breaking up fights all afternoon.” Audrey questions, “All day?” She's concerned. “Ever since church got out?” James responds. Agent Howard/Stephen King knows what this means. He turns to Audrey, “You have to work?” Audrey sighs disappointed, “We’ll talk later.” She promises James. “Yeah, no problem.” He says very politely, "I'm just glad someone knows something."

On her way from Joes she looks to her phone and notices reports that fights have broken out all over town. She walks into the police station.

At the station, Nathan is there. Nathan is on his way out. He suspects the trouble belongs to the woman who yelled at Sam. That started the fighting. Audrey agrees and heads out with Nathan.

At the woman’s house. Audrey and Nathan find the woman on the ground, dying. She admits she was killed by her husband. She dies. Audrey calls it in, thinking that means it’s over.

Back at the station, the fighting continues. Cops pull in people, and jail cells are full of angry people. The phones continue to ring. Dwight says it’s not the woman since the fighting is continuing and getting worse.

Audrey and Nathan think about that morning and wonder if the husband might be the one troubled. Nathan “I’ll get Stan to pull his financials.” Nathan pulls out his phone. Audrey nods, “I’m glad to see you’re a cop again.” “What was I before?” He questions holding back on dialing. Audrey comments, “A horny teenager.” Nathan argues, “They were just nice to me. I was just being nice back.” Nathan says, he dials and puts the phone to his ear. Audrey, unconvinced, walks away as they head out.

At the Good Shepard Church, the older woman and her helpers leave to get ready for the party that night. Duke remains with Sam who. Together they get out trash cans. Duke helps.

Outside the church, angry people start to approach with guns. They start shooting things up.

Inside the main room, the food gets shot up. Duke and Sam take cover in her office. When Duke pulls out a gun to shoot back Sam won’t let him shoot anyone. Duke reluctantly agrees and calls Audrey. Audrey explains it’s an anger trouble. Over the phone, Sam says she has an idea.

Act IV

Dwight shaking his head utters. “I don’t like this” as they put him in a bulletproof suit. He’s not happy but agrees, “let’s get this over with.” They place a helmet over his head. "Bullet proof glass," Nathan says reassuring him.

Nathan and Audrey take Dwight out on the back of his truck. They pull up behind the church. The group with guns surrounds the church. In park, Audrey reeves the engine. The group turns to them making a space. Audrey puts the truck in drive and reves the engine. The space widens just enough for her as the crowd runs to the sides. Audrey pulls up onto the church lawn. The people with guns aim and fire at the truck. With Dwight out by the church all the bullets hit him, or rather the suit. As the gunman look around confused Duke comes out holding Sam in his arms, blood all over her. The people with guns calm down and pull their guns down.
Audrey and Nathan race out of the truck and find the man who killed his wife. He’s crying. Nathan goes to him to cure him, but suddenly everyone is mad at Nathan. All the people pull their guns back up. They aim at Nathan. And Dwight’s bulletproof glass in the helmet he wears is cracking. He hears the chocking of guns and says, “oh no.” Suddenly someone cries out, “Stop!” to the man who killed his wife. He turns to his surprise its Sam, she’s alive and standing beside him. “You’re troubled Zachary, your anger killed your wife. That doesn’t make you any less to God. God still loves you.” He cries and falls to his knees. She places her hand on his head. The people holding guns slowly walk up to Sam and put the guns down at her feet. Nathan and Dwight are safe.

As Sam stands by the church wishing the last of the people goodbye Duke walks up to her and comments, “what kind of Reverend has a bag of fake blood in her desk drawer?” “A Haven Reverend,” she says. Duke nods. Sam sighs, “I should let the others know there won’t be a party tonight.” “Don’t,” Duke says stopping her. “You can have it at the Gull.” “You’re sure?” Sam asks. “Who doesn’t like a party?” Duke says. Sam leans towards him, “Maybe you should come to one of my services.” “Don’t push it,” Duke says. She laughs, “thank you.” She says. Duke nods.

Zachery thanks Nathan for curing him and apologizes. Nathan nods. Dwight makes sure that he won’t tell anyone as he pulls him away in cuffs (for killing his wife, something Zachery knows he has to pay for). Nathan walks away saddened. Audrey can tell Nathan’s upset. She talks to him. He’s frustrated he can’t cure himself. Audrey tells him to give himself time.

Vince and Dave bicker about spying on James. They agree to simply head over to the coffee shop and see if he’s there. James is there closing. He apologizes saying everyone’s at the party at the Gull. They invite James to join them as they’re on their way. James thanks them and says, “I think I will.” Implying he wasn’t going to go originally.

At the party as everyone gathers celebrating the Reverend's arrival Nathan sees James, he goes to him and presses his hands against his cheeks saying James, James it’s you. James in his effort to get away from him hits his head on a post in the Gull, it hurts, and he exclaims it. Nathan asks him if he’s okay. James sensing his head hurts realizes he can feel and shouts that he reaches out ecstatic to feel the table, chairs, and other people. He turns to Nathan and says, “You cured me. You cured my trouble.” Suddenly the crowd turns to Nathan. They all want to be cured too, they start to draw in on them crushing them...
