Haven Rewrites S6 E7 “See Monster”

S6 E7 “See Monster” With Abe gone the Church group becomes more aggressive in fighting the troubles, and Audrey and Nathan fight a sea monster trouble.

Previously on Haven
Rev. Driscoll of the Good Shepard Church riled up the people of Haven to think of the troubled, people with supernatural abilities, as evil. They brought violence on the troubled. The new Reverend Samantha Lewis has moved towards loving compassion.
Duke Crocker’s father previously worked killing the trouble ridding their families of their troubles – So the Church tried to recruit Duke to do the same. Duke's brother, Abe, worked for them for awhile but then Nathan healed Abe of his trouble and Abe left Haven.

Teaser
In Haven’s public library Vince and Dave bickering about which books they need for Nathan, discover inside one of the histories of Haven is a name –someone else has checked it out. Someone that has links to the Church group that wanted to kill the troubled. They wonder if the church group might be trying to compile their own history to take out the troubled one at a time.

On the shores of Haven, Duke is surfing with a woman, Laura.
As she comes in from a great wave and he does okay Duke jokes, “so that’s how you do it in the professionals.”
She nods and confirms, “Yeah!”  She’s a professional surfer (and the actress is too!). Telling Duke that she has to come in she reveals the reason is she is meeting her new mother in law for the first time. Duke agrees to walk her home.

As they come upon the beach house that her husband, Ron, owns they see her mother in law fighting with her son. His mother is disappointed in his choice of wife, “You could have married anyone, you have tons of money…you should go back to Boston. Why did you buy a beach house here, to begin with? Your father and I wanted you to leave Haven.” He argues that he likes it in Haven and Laura likes it too. He loves her, but his mother clearly doesn’t like Laura.
The audience hears all this before Laura does, Ron’s mother declares in objection, “You married a Cetus!” the mother says angrily accusing them of being sirens, “actual sirens,” she says, they are “sea monsters.”
The son doesn’t take his mother seriously.
But when the mother repeats that his wife is a sea monster as Laura the wife makes her way into the house, Laura overhears, and in front of her husband, she turns into an actual sea monster. Crashing the window of the beach house, tentacles and all, she scurries off into the sea.

Act I
Duke tries to convince the husband to get off the Cape Rouge (Duke’s boat) as Ron attempts to head after his wife. When Duke doesn’t want to go out with him, worried about Ron and wanting to call Audrey and Nathan Ron accuses Duke of doing the same as his mother saying “If you’re really our friend you’ll help me find her.”
Unable to say no or convince Ron he should call Audrey, Duke can’t let Ron go alone, so he gets on the boat and calls Sam covertly to have her call Audrey; speaking about a “problem” with Laura.
Sam, as Duke’s wife, understands his subtext, and asks “I need to call Audrey don’t I. Immediately Duke simply says, “Yes.” Then, as he’s still on the phone he tells the husband, Ron, “We’re looking for a giant sea monster, it shouldn’t be so hard to find her.” Sam gets it repeating, “Okay, telling Audrey about a giant Sea monster. She’ll probably go to deep water.” Sam suggests to Duke. Duke repeats this to Ron, and so they head to deep water.

Audrey and Nathan show up at the beach house to look at the scene, the large window covering the back of the house, towards the beach, is broken as she went right through it when she turned into a large sea monster.

On Duke’s boat, Ron and Duke have a tense discussion about what he knows. Duke brings it up asking if he knew. Ron didn’t know his wife was troubled. He’d heard about the troubles from his parents but didn’t think they were real. It’s clear he still loves his wife troubled or not, so it matters very little difference if she is. Shaking Ron is worried about her.

Audrey and Nathan at the house are not assuming anything. They promise to check the database they have but don’t like Ron’s mother, Mrs. Bradshaw, especially when they learn she called Laura a sea monster and is insistent that she is because her last name is Cetus (which refers to sea monster from Greek Mythology). Audrey and Nathan find this evidence flimsy and not liking Mrs. Bradshaw simply want her to be wrong.

          Audrey calls to talk to Duke asking him to ask what the husband knew. Duke reveals he already asked and says he doesn’t think that she knew, he’s known her for years. Duke also reveals he’s worried about Ron, he’s on a rampage. Duke doesn’t want to call the coast guard because he’s worried they might hurt her. Audrey reveals that she called them;
Flashback—Audrey is on the phone claiming there’s a movie shoot in town that’s filming a sea monster movie so don’t worry about strange things today but let us know where they are filming they only have certain permits- so you shouldn’t see them. The coast guard says we’ll do.
Back in the present Duke thinks that’s brilliant and thanks, Audrey.
With Nathan Mrs. Bradshaw at the scene of the beach house, is insistent that Laura is the one to blame for all this. As Audrey arrives back inside Mrs. Bradshaw upset that they aren’t after the sea monster calls Nathan clumsy, tripping over something just after they do. Audrey then asks Mrs. Bradshaw to come to the station with her. Giving Nathan a look he leaves the room, tripping a bit since his foot was hurt in his original clumsy moment. He calls James asking him to help “your mother” question a witness, “she could be troubled. A very special kind.”

Act II
Not appreciating being treated as a suspect Mrs. Bradshaw is upset as Audrey and James question her, accusing them of being lazy and stupid. But Audrey and James aren’t worried because they are immune to the troubles. Bradshaw says she has evidence from the history of Haven that the Cetus’ are sea monsters. Audrey promises to look into it but asks Mrs. Bradshaw to stay at home and don’t leave town.

In the office with Nathan, Audrey, and James speak about the interrogation. Audrey makes a comment about the idea of last names matching troubles, saying Bradshaw’s must be killer oak trees. Nathan is confused at this comment. Audrey explains. Their last name Bradshaw means, “broad-spreading oak.” James questioning how she knows that gets Audrey to reveal that Lin a former personality of Audrey’s liked learning the history of names. Nathan asks if Audrey remembers anything from her pervious personality that could point to this trouble. Audrey is about to speak when Dave and Vince enter to talk about the Bradshaw’s. Mrs. Bradshaw was the one to look at the history book of Haven, Vince knows she is part of the Old Church group, riled up by Rev. Driscoll and still a member of it. This gives Audrey and Nathan even more reason not to believe her and to be worried about Laura.

The church group isn’t happy that Mrs. Bradshaw is being treated the way she is and they received a message from Mrs. Bradshaw who told them about the sea monster. She gives a passionate speech about how they have to protect Haven from this monster, they have to kill it. They prepare to go out on their boats and kill a sea monster.

Meanwhile, in Haven, Audrey talks Sam into talking to the Church group, since they are still part of what is now her flock, left over from Rev. Driscoll's days where he taught hate against the troubled. Sam agrees knowing she should.

In Sam’s quest to find out who is still a member of the church group she starts at a house. Zed, a man in his late 40s lives there. Sam recalls his confession to her, that he was the one who fired the shot to kill Evi (Duke’s first wife, who is Sam’s husband). Sam approaches Zed, apologetic for asking the favor and gives him an out not to help her. But she reminds him he wanted to help the troubled now/turn over a new leaf; She wants his help learning about the Church group. He’s amenable but doesn’t want to have anything to do with them, weary she might think he does. When she asks about Ron’s parents, his mother especially if they were and are now members the man is certain they were, and she’s very active. He agrees to get into the group, since they have approached him a couple times, to spy for Sam. He knows what violence against the trouble does to the one who causes it, he wants to help.

Out at sea the Church group finds the sea monster and fights it, shouting inciting calls to her goading her on. A man is wounded, and so is she, the monster cries out in pain. She flees.

She flees to the Gull as Daniel is having lunch with Lyla, James’ girlfriend to get to know her, regretting that James couldn’t come as they planned the sea monster comes very close to the shore, splashing the outdoor tables. Daniel tries to stop the panic and get everyone inside. Even with Lyla’s help, there’s too much panic to stop it.

Act III
People are panicking at the Gull even as Daniel and Lyla try to calm them down. Jimmie, the bartender behind the bar, calls Duke, but unable to get a signal calls Sam.
Sam just finished talking to Zed, learns from Jimmie, that bartender, since he’s unable to contact Duke, about the sea monster at the Gull. Quickly Sam and the man who killed Evi, Zed, head over separately to stop people from connecting the two of them. They know the church group will want to stop her, the sea monster. They want to protect Laura and the people that might get hurt.

At the police station calls pour in about the monster declaring it is ten feet tall, that it has large red eyes, things that were not there when Laura initially turned into a monster.

People at the Gull are panicking as Laura grows and her eyes turn red. Lead by Daniel they hide inside. Laura with her now red eyes peaks in through the window as if looking for something. Daniel notices she has a spear stuck in her shoulder and looks terrified.

Audrey and Nathan arrive at the Gull and help Daniel keep people back. Then they both head out so Nathan can touch her and heal her. They make the plan that Audrey will calm her down, and Nathan will put his hands on her. They need to get Nathan close enough to heal her, without getting catapulted into the sea by a tentacle. They notice she’s grown a lot taller than before. Audrey speaks to Laura treating her like a human being she’s sensitive to her and asks her to calm down, telling her they care about her and want to help. Nathan manages to get close to heal her. Inside people are worried muttering to themselves on edge. And outside Nathan is knocked off his feet by a tentacle and can’t reach her as she slinks away. Audrey tries to calm her again but is unable to. Nathan, getting up and going after her tries to heal her again, as people continue to watch inside, but Nathan is thrown by the monster into the sea. Audrey yells “Nathan!”

Act IV
As people are picking up the floor of the Gull, after the sea monster sighting, Zed is walking around as if a bystander. Audrey stands next to Nathan, dripping wet a puddle forms underneath him. They acknowledge that she, Laura as the sea monster, was bigger and wonder/are worried about her growing. Just then Sam comes in panicked asking Audrey and Nathan “where are they?”
Audrey is confused about who.
“The Church group.” Sam saying wondering. Zed comes in and announces they weren’t there – he showed up during the action.
Sam is confused where they could be she’s betting that if Mrs. Bradshaw is a member, she would be looking for Laura. This is when Daniel reveals that Laura was wounded, a spear in her shoulder and he’s betting it was the Church group.
Sam knows Duke wouldn’t have done that. And Daniel, as Sam picks up her phone to warn Duke who is out on the boat looking for her says, “She probably came here looking for Duke’s help.”
While Sam’s cell phone rings, as she holds it up to her ear, she stares at Nathan and is annoyed telling him playfully that he’s making a puddle all over their restaurant floor. She can’t get a hold of Duke but promises to keep trying.
Audrey is clear – they need to protect Laura and find out where she is because someone could get badly hurt.

They, Daniel, Audrey, and Nathan, enter the station trying to find leads on a giant sea monster, wondering if there’s any news. Looking at the reports, they try to sort through them. Just then Vince and Dave enter with more information about her. They have checked the histories and discovered/tell Audrey and Nathan in the office with a demonstration on slides that there were two different events of sea monster activity.
Audrey vaguely remembers them, one was when she was Helena but didn’t think Laura was related. Both the individuals Audrey, as her previous personalities didn’t know well. All she knew was they were sailors, and as such had nicknames and terrible tempers. She didn’t know they were Cetus’s. Vince and Dave reveal they were but also point out that they turned into two different sea creatures. So they are still baffled as to what the trouble really is.

Sam now at the church finally gets a hold of Duke on his phone. He is still on the Rouge with Ron and is busy keeping him from hyper focusing on finding his wife, trying to slow him down – get him to drink and eat. Sam informs Duke they found Laura and calls them back. Duke is thrilled to finally get Ron back to shore, baiting him with the information.
But upon arrival at the station, Ron is informed his wife is still out there. He’s pissed. But Audrey, remembering what her father said about Laura coming to the Gull to find Duke believes Laura is still herself as the sea monster and asks Ron; where Laura would go if she was scared. He knows just the place, a bay where they used to spend the night by the beach. He takes Audrey and Nathan there. Duke, exhausted. Sam, seeing his exhaustion empathizes saying, “poor baby.” and he milks it.

As they head to the Bay, Ron’s mother is searching his house, through Laura’s things to find clues for the Church group concerning where she is. Some of the members of the group are banged up pretty bad after the attack. But they care very little as they try to mend these men themselves.
The mother finds a picture of the Laura and Ron at the bay and knowing she taught her son to write on the back of photos gets the location, and there’s an inscription – “we could have stayed forever.”
The leader of the church group wants to head there, but Mrs. Bradshaw insists that she go. They know if Ron figured out she was still in there he would probably be at the bay. She wants to straighten out her son.

At the Bay, Ron, Nathan, and Audrey arrive, but it’s calm. Audrey and Nathan believe they should look elsewhere. But desperate Ron calls out for her, and she emerges from the bay. Seeing the spear in her shoulder, Ron goes to her before Audrey and Nathan have a chance to stop him. Calling out to him they tell him to stop. He’s able to step right up to her and strokes her softly. Audrey and Nathan stare in amazement.
Ron stroking her says, “What have they done to you.” She moans and nuzzles him happily and moans in sadness. Stroking her, he calls her, as if it’s a nickname, “my beautiful brown eyed girl.” Just then she turns into Laura, the brunette she was before. Her shoulder is hurt, the spear beside her.
Ron gives Laura his jacket to wear, and Audrey turns towards the shore saying, “I’ll call an ambulance.” As she picks up her phone. A glance passes between her and Nathan as if to say, “Could it be Ron?”
Just then Ron’s mother shows up, and Nathan turns to Audrey, the phone to her ear he taps her on the shoulder, “His mother. They could both be troubled.”
Audrey busy ordering the ambulance Nathan turns to Mrs. Bradshaw, “She’s fine now. It’s best if you’re not here.”
Ron’s purposely keeps his back to his mother, done with her. Caring deeply he helps Laura. His shirt is ripped, a piece of it around her wound Ron helps her up.
Nathan looking to Mrs. Bradshaw holds up his hand holding her at a distance, “He’s not going to listen to you now. You should go.”
Mrs. Bradshaw putting her face in Nathan’s say, “He’s my son I’m not going anywhere.” Yelling to Ron, she says, “Ron, she’s a siren.” Just then Laura turns into a siren a mermaid creature. She pushes Ron away and swims up onto the rocks where she lets out a long screaming screech. Nathan, Audrey, Ron, and the Bradshaw’s hold their ears in pain. She jumps into the ocean and swims away.
As Mrs. Bradshaw questions Nathan and Audrey saying, “You’re not going to do anything you-“ Nathan and Audrey pull out there guns and aim it at Mrs. Bradshaw.
Not in the least bit scared Mrs. Bradshaw is surprised, “What are you going to do, shoot me?”
Audrey begins to explain, “You are the one doing this Mrs. Bradshaw. You called her a sea monster, and she turned into one, then a siren and she turned into that.”
Mrs. Bradshaw insistent says confidently, “I am not troubled. She is.”
As Mrs. Bradshaw steps up to them, Audrey warns her, “If you take another step say another word we’ll shoot.”
But Mrs. Bradshaw continues, “You’re just trigger happy bullies.”
Audrey is panicked she knows she’s immune but Nathan isn’t she doesn’t know where to point her gun at Nathan or Mrs. Bradshaw. She turns to Nathan, pointing her gun at him. Nathan without a word from Audrey and no sign of struggle within him puts down his gun saying, “It’s not her.”
There’s still the question of “What is it?” What is this trouble that turns a woman into a sea monster and then a siren? Who’s trouble is it?

Act V
At the station as Audrey, Nathan, James, Daniel, Ron, and a resting Duke go over the information they have realized the truth – it’s only when Laura hears an accusation of being something that she turns into it. Ron was able to turn her into a brown eyed girl after calling her that. The bystanders at the Gull made her have red eyes and be humungous. That’s why her ancestors didn’t turn into the same thing. She is the one who is troubled, but she’ll turn into anything they want her to be – except since Audrey and James are immune they can’t affect her.
Dave and Vince at the station show up with all the information on sirens, suggesting if she really is one she’ll follow their behavior. Knowing that sirens, the one she seems to be, hate men, they may have a battle ahead of them. Audrey, James, and Nathan head out to the caves, where they think she’ll be since that’s the siren’s natural environment. Duke offers his boat again. Ron goes with them insistent.
The church group has the same idea, having spied on Dave and Vince, they go out on their boats to kill the monster, unaware they are responsible for creating her. Mrs. Bradshaw leads them determined to get Laura away from his son, to kill her, accusing her of being foul things.
Duke, Ron, Audrey, and Nathan arrive at the sea cave as members of the church group are doing the same. They head into a sea cave with Duke’s help. Inside the church group attacks Laura. She fights back, but she ends up unconscious just as Audrey and the others arrive. Ron begs them not to hurt her, pleading with his mother. When Mrs. Bradshaw demands that she’s a monster.
Duke interrupts making a speech to all the members of the church group relaying that she’s only a monster because that’s how you see her. “You’ve done this with your fear! She becomes whatever you accuse her of being! These troubles don’t just affect people they affect the whole town. You somehow you think that you can stay unaffected, but today you’ve shown people how much of a monster you can be. You’ve accused her of terrible things. Ron loves her, sees her as a beautiful, kind, loving woman. She’s trapped now as something you imposed on her. We all feel trapped as who people think we are! Let her be how he sees her. Otherwise what happens here will be your fault.”
The men pause, but Mrs. Bradshaw is insistent on finishing her.
Then Zed, who has joined the church group begs them, “Don’t kill her.” And reveals he knows what killing does and it’s not something they want on their conscience, “I know because I killed Evi Crocker.” Audrey looks to Duke who is shocked about it. Audrey is worried that he’ll hurt the man. But Duke doesn’t do anything but pant upset.
Just then, Laura begins to wake up, and Ron goes to her not caring about the men around her. He calls her “the woman I married.” And she changes, and Nathan reaches out to heal her. The church group does not get in his way.

At the Station Duke, Nathan, Dave, Vince, James, and Daniel say goodbye to Laura and Ron as they thank all of them. James asks if he was ever tempted to change her into something better. Ron shakes his head, “I thought about it but, no.” Laura teases that she could have given him some ideas. But Ron’s insistent he loves her for how she is.
When the couple leaves James mentions to the group “we’ve learned something here.” Audrey and Nathan suggest they’ve learned that things are only as scary as they make them out to be.
James shakes his head, “No…Nathan really is clumsy.”
Audrey understanding does say, “You did trip and not because Mrs. Bradshaw called you clumsy.”
Everyone chuckles but Duke who is deep in thought. Duke tries to slink out, and Audrey goes to him, “How are you doing?” She asks.
Duke sighs revealing just through the sigh that he’s struggling, “I have to go.”
Audrey puts her hand on Duke’s arm insistent calling out “Duke.” Duke turns to her and looking him in the eyes, she calmly says, “Don’t do anything stupid.”
Duke nods, “I just want to talk to Sam.”
Audrey nods, she understands that, if anything like that happened to her, Nathan, her husband would be the first person that she’d talk to. Letting him go to his wife, Duke walks out of the station.
As Duke approaches the church, he sees Zed coming out of the office with Sam. They have been talking. Duke lets out a deep sigh as he watches Zed walk away. Seeing Duke Sam walks down to him simply ready to listen.
“Did you know?” Duke asks.
“Yes.” Sam says, “He came to me in confidence. I couldn’t tell you.” Sam says apologetically.
“Good, they should be able to trust you.” Duke starts to tear up shaking.
“You can tell me anything.” She says.
Duke looks around as if trying to get his bearings, “Not here.” He sighs, “I want to go home.”
Sam takes his hand, and they walk to his truck. She takes his keys and drives.

Inside the cape rouge Duke is quiet as Sam’s patiently waiting for him to speak. He finally does, “What was Zed talking to you about. If you can tell me?” There’s tension in the air as Sam feels Duke is angry with her.
Sam nods, “The church group wants to meet me with me start talking about their side of things and listening to mine.”
Duke nods, “That’s good.”
Sam reaches out, “Duke, I didn’t want to keep this from you.”
He sits down but is still jittery as he takes her hand, “I’m not mad at you. I’m just confused.” He stands and begins to talk about himself, “It’s been awhile since Evi died. We weren’t on good terms, really weren’t married then. I loved her at one point, but I don’t know if I really did or just thought I did.”
“You were married there’s a certain amount of intimacy in that,” Sam says.
Duke nods, “I was so mad at her when she died. Mad at her for lying again, for getting herself killed. And I wanted to hurt them. Nathan locked me in a cell to stop me. And then life went on. And I met you.” He says with light in his eyes. He looks to Sam rubbing his finger against her cheek lovingly. He looks down and sighs again, “I’m not angry at Zed, I’m not…it’s like I don’t care about Evi…” it’s clear by his tone he feels guilty about that.
Sam stands up and embraces him, “You’ve let go of your anger. Found a way to forgive. That doesn’t mean you didn’t care about her.”
Pausing to look her in the face and caressing her face Duke says, “I love you so much.”
He pursues his lips, “I don’t think we’d be together if Evi hadn’t died. I’m almost glad.” He says looking away ashamed.
Sam steps up to him, “You love your life Duke there’s no shame in that.”
Leaning his head against hers, he says, “You’re kind.”
She says, “You’re stubborn.”
He chuckles, and she says, “I love you” and kisses him deeply. He returns the kiss pulling her close. Her hands go up the back of his shirt as they kiss deeply.
