S4 E10 "Tainted Memories"

S4 E10 – “Tainted Memories” As Duke and Sam get ready for their wedding people begin to remember their pasts as a lot more terrifying than they used to.

Teaser

Late at night fog covers a house, from inside a woman screams.

Inside a man runs into a study where Glenda, a woman in her forties sits at a desk terrified. He holds her.  She tells him “It happened again.” He urges her to stop working so hard, “it’s getting worse.” He utters concerned. She says, “I’ll stop after I arrange Duke and Sam’s wedding. I promised them.”

Daytime in Haven, at the back of the church in a large grassy area behind the church with trees surrounding people set up chairs, tables, and a dance floor in the center. Glenda shouts orders to people saying “the rehearsal dinner tables go up first”. Sam stands with the phone to her ear, “It’s okay really…I understand…It’s fine really….We’ll come visit you…I love you daddy.” Dwight and James come up behind her holding boxes of lights and says, “Your dad’s not coming to the wedding?” In a matter of fact way. Sam says, “He can’t come back to Haven, too many bad memories.” Dwight nods, “Lights?” Sam points over to the trees. “You can start over by the front.” Sam says. Dwight and James walk over to the trees passing Duke who watches guys setting up the chairs and goes towards them saying, “hey, it’s twelve rows of 30 not 30 rows of twelve.”

Audrey and Nathan walk towards Sam, Audrey carries a box with candles and candle holders in it. She tells Nathan, “Let me talk to her…” Nathan asks, “We both agree having a couple weeks of an engagement is crazy.” Audrey nods, “Yes.” As Nathan says, “Especially when you’re marrying Duke.” They meets Sam in the grassy area as people continue to setup. “Oh, thank you.” Sam says about the candles and candleholders, “this is great. Can you put them on that table over there? We’re still waiting for the table clothes.” Sam says and points. Audrey gives Nathan the box. “Sure.” He says and goes off, “Sam, are you sure about this, its pretty quick, you and Duke getting married. I mean you’ve only been dating a few months.” Sam shrugs, “You know when you know.” Sam says unaffected as she sets up chairs around the tables. “Have you talked about everything? Where are you going to live?” Sam turns to Audrey, “Duke owns the boat so we’re going to live on the boat. “You’re okay with living on a boat?” Audrey questions. “Yeah, we’re having our honeymoon on the boat why not live there.” Audrey is frustrated, Nathan comes back after setting the box down. “You know, we could make it a double wedding.” Sam says. Audrey shakes her head, “no, we’re not ready for that.” Behind Audrey Nathan looks heartbroken. Sam sees it and is saddened, “Oh, well. Then I guess I’ll get to marry you two.” “Sam.” Audrey says annoyed with her, “Audrey,” Sam says and puts her hands on Audrey’s shoulders “I love that you’re concerned but Duke and I know what we’re doing. A good friend of mine did pre-marriage counselling for us.” Sam looks behind Audrey as a blond girl approaches. Kat, the blond girl looks very much like Sam. A hanging bag is over her shoulder. Sam gasps excited and goes over to her hugging her, she calls her Kat. As Kat hugs Sam in returns speaks into her ear, “I can’t believe you’re getting married.” Vince and Dave come up to Sam and Kat. Sam introduces Kat to Vince, Dave, and Audrey as her sister and maid of honor. Vince and Dave are polite and tells Sam they have the dress and tux. Kat adds, “I have my dress too if you want to approve it.” Sam shakes her head, “I’m sure it’s fine.” Vince turns to Sam, “You’re sure being laid back about this.” He says. Sam smiles and shrugs.

Across the field Duke yells at the flower delivery girl, who looks like she’s in her teens, saying “we ordered white roses not yellow ones. Take them back.” He chases them back into the church. Dave says, “Apparently Duke isn’t so laid back.” Sam responds, “I should go talk to him.” She walks over that direction.

Inside the church Sam tells the teens carrying flowers, “You can come on back.” She says and they do as she says. Duke’s upset, “But we ordered white Roses.” Sam looks to Duke, “Duke, they’re just flowers. It’s really not a big deal.” Duke sighs, she’s right. “I just want this day to be perfect. I know girls dream about their wedding day.” “I didn’t.” Sam says, “I dreamed about this.” She kisses Duke deeply. Sam breaks the kiss and says, “I just want you for a messy but fulfilling life time, one day isn’t going to make or break anything.” Duke agrees and smiles at her so in love with her. She hugs him and whispers in his ears, “I am looking forward to that honeymoon.” Sam says and flashes back to;

Duke and her making love in bed together, the Chinese tattoo on her back peeking through the sheets. Suddenly, the flashback turns into a nightmare. Duke rolls her onto her back and grabs hold of her and tells her, “You’re going to do exactly as I tell you.”

Back in the present, Sam and Duke in a hug, Sam starts to scream, in terror.

Act I

Sam sits on a bench Duke next to her. Audrey, Nathan, Dave, Vince, Dwight, and Glenda around her. “It felt so real.” She says. “It terrified me, my heart is still pounding,” James hands her some water. She thanks him and turns to Duke, “How’s your ear?” Duke looks to her and yells, “What?” Sam sighs, placing her hand against his ear apologetic, “I’m fine.” Duke yells. Dwight says, “He’ll probably have hearing in a couple hours.” Audrey questions, “So you weren’t dreaming but you had a nightmare?” Sam nods, “Yeah, like a daydream nightmare.” James volunteers, “A trouble?” Audrey nods, “But whose trouble?” Sam turns to Glenda, “you had a similar fright this morning” She says and turns to Audrey, “We were the first people here.” Nathan is concerned, “This could be spread by touch.” Audrey looks to the crowd. She tells them to calm down, Nathan says no one should leave they have a possible situation everyone should stay calm but refrain from touching each other. Over by the catering table Kat says, is it like a virus or something, Jeremy, a young man at the catering table says, “there’s something you should know about Haven.”

Audrey and Nathan go back to the huddle, Audrey turns to Glenda, “We’re going to need to question you.” Sam offers her office. Nathan upset says he’ll call into the station and see if there’s been any other problems. Audrey’s confused but Nathan leaves before she has a chance to argue. Dwight, confused turns to James, Vince, and Dave and tells them to question any of the catering and delivery people, “these are the people who’ve had regular contact with Glenda in the last few weeks.” Dave assures Sam they’re figure it out.

On the other side of the field Kat, leans against a table over by the caterers. She says wow, “troubles? I thought my dad was just making that up.” She watches Sam as she’s comforted by Vince, Dave, Dwight, Duke, and James. Kat wines about how everyone loves Sam, she’s the perfect older sister, “why can’t you be like Sam Kat, Sam’s so wonderful Kat.” Jeremy empathizes. Kat’s embarrassed. Jeremy says he thinks Kat’s the better sister, “Sam’s too preachy.”  He suggests they do something to shake things up.

In Sam’s office Audrey questions Glenda, asks her if she’s met any new people recently, hired new people. Glenda can’t think of anyone she’s recently hired. Audrey accuses her of being difficult. She makes it clear she uses the same people for everything she always has. In Sam’s office Audrey asks Glenda to describe what happened. Glenda start describing.

Outside in the field, with the phone to his ear Nathan learns everything is A-Okay at the station.

On Stan’s way to get donuts things were cheery and quiet.

In the field, Nathan thanks Stan and hangs up. He sulks mad. He looks at the engagement ring in his pocket. Dave and Vince question what Nathan is doing and decide to go talk to him.

A large dark haired man stands in the field. He spots Sam and Duke. Sam rubs Duke’s ear, “that’s better.” Duke says normally. The large dark haired man approaches Duke and Sam. Duke sees him and says, “What are you doing here?” Duke stands all aggressive. Sam is concerned, Duke and the man hug. “I though you weren’t going to come.” The man says, “Someone from the church called me said there might be work.” Duke says, “You don’t want to stay in Haven. What about Laura?” Awkward the man says, “She filed for divorce.” Duke says, “Man, I’m sorry.” The man turns to Sam, “This must be the special lady.” Duke introduces Sam to “Abe, Abe Crocker.” He says. “Duke’s brother?” Sam says, “One of them.” Abe says. “Did I hear right you’re a Reverend?” Sam nods, “Yeah.” Abe chuckles, “Haven certainly has changed.” Sam says, “Yes, I’ve got boobs.” Abe laughs, “I like her.” Sam says nice to meet you and says she’s going to let them talk. Duke offers to help Sam set up she tells him maybe Abe could help you finish laying the dance floor.  Duke smiles at her and nods. Abe watches seeing he cares. As they walk over to the dance floor Abe asks, “So a Reverend how did that happen?” Duke responds, “I’ve made some changes in my life, really good ones. Sam’s the best thing that ever happened to me.” “Not like Evi?” Abe says with attitude as he begins to help. He didn’t like Evi. “No,” Duke says with certainty, “thank goodness.”

Nathan kicking at the field is pissed. He intentionally drops the ring box on the ground. Vince picks it up “Nathan, you dropped this.” He says as he picks it up. He follows Nathan. Nathan turns around. Dave watches, “Is that what I think it is?” Nathan grabs it from them, “Not that it matters. After everything we’ve been through Audrey still says, ‘we’re not ready for that’. Dave questions, “She said no?” Vince says, “That doesn’t sound like Audrey.” Dave is shocked. Nathan stumbles, “Well, I didn’t actually ask her.” Vince and Dave give him a look, He whines, “She was talking to Sam and told her we weren’t ready. I remember when I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her that was two years ago, he Flashes back to;

Nathan tells Audrey that he found Lucy Ripply, and she tells him “no matter what she says I’m coming back I promise, you’re not just my partner”. He says “I’ll be here.” She walks away but then stops and comes back and kisses him. As she walks away the second time he looks on her fondly. Then, the memory turns into a nightmare she turns to him with a gun and says, “I don’t really love you.” and shoots him.

Back in the present Nathan screams terrified. Audrey rushes to him but he continues to scream terrified pulling down table clothes and knocking over chairs. She says, “It’s spreading.”

Act II

Sam, Duke, Nathan, James, Dwight, Vince and Dave all congregate on the grass area. Nathan, sitting down on a chair in the grass area tell Audrey he’s alright. Audrey argues with Nathan, “You weren’t alright a minute ago. What happened?” Nathan sighs like he doesn’t want to talk. Vince and Dave explain “he was remembering you two, when he gave you Lucy Ripples’ address and you planted a big one on him.” Vince jokes, “apparently it was a lot scarier than he remembered”. Sam says, I was remembering too she turns to Duke, “that night when I brought scotch over to your boat.” With a look she urges Duke to remember, there was more to it than that. That’s the night they slept together. He does remember, “The scotch.” He says and then pauses, “I didn’t realize that was scary.” She says, “It turned scary. You pinned me down and said I had to do everything you told me to. It reminded me of Vernon actually, when he tied me to a chair.” Nathan suggests, “Maybe the nightmares are part of our subconscious.” Audrey then says, “And remembering triggers it.” Duke scoffs, “Well that’s perfect. It’s a wedding everyone is thinking about how pathetic their single life is. Everyone is remembering.” Audrey turns to Nathan, “What did the station say?” She asks. Nathan responds, “No one else is experiencing it.” Audrey says, “That means the trigger must be here.” Dwight’s concerned about keeping everyone calm. Sam tells the people to gather around.

Audrey tells the people that gathered around that there’s a trouble going around that is triggered by memories so everyone needs to stay in the present, think about what’s in front of you.

A young woman starts to scream. And a man screams.  James goes to one as Nathan to another, Audrey’s upset, “It’s getting worse.”

In a corner Abe stands confused, “What’s a trouble?” He asks. One of the church members says, “That’s why we needed you back in Haven.” Abe turns around to look at him, “What can I do?” “Stop it.” Abe doesn’t understand, “How?”

The crowd starts remembering their past relationships, the abusive boyfriends, the ones they walked away from because they were never satisfied. The girlfriends that made them feel like their life meant something telling them that they were nothing. Vince remembers Sarah rejecting him, the memory turns into a nightmare and she says “you’ll never be good enough.” Dave remembers Sarah too when she threatened his life trying to get him to stop threatening her and the memory turns into a nightmare when she says, “You’re just insane with all your facts and numbers no one will ever care about you.”

In the grass area Audrey asks if Nathan is with her, he’s with her. She’s turned to James, concerned for him. James jokes about how he’s fine, “I don’t really have any memories the advantage of amnesia.”

People start wanting to leave but Audrey yells at them to stay in the grass area they can’t risk it spreading.

Act III

As people start wanting to leave Nathan and James help Audrey keep the people together. When Nathan starts remembering again, all about them, when they first met, when he first realized he could feel her, when he realized they had a son, how they first made love and they turn into nightmares. Audrey and James try to help him but they can’t – they have to find the troubled person.

Sam asks Kat if she’s okay. Duke’s a little offended she didn’t ask him saying under his breath, “is she okay.” Kat nods but then remembers having a fight with Sam, her sister, where the nightmare turns Sam beating her. “See”, Sam says, “I’m better at everything.”  Sam says with blood all over her hands. Kat starts to scream and Duke and Sam hold her. Sam tells her, “You’re okay.”

Audrey explains to James they have to find out who is doing this. Dwight agrees, He remembers when his little girl was a bride for Halloween one year and it turns into a nightmare as she asks him, “Why won’t I have a wedding daddy? Why did you let them kill me?” Dwight yells clawing at the tables and toppling them over.

James and Audrey know they need to hurry to find out who is doing this. They look around at the people affected.

Kat is stuck in her nightmare with Duke and Sam holding her. Suddenly Abe starts to scream Duke runs to him concerned. For Abe a dark haired woman holds a knife on him, “I want you out of my life for good” she says. Abe begs, “Honey, don’t. I know our marriage is shaky but please.” Abe looks down and his heart is cut out of his chest. He screams.

Kat, stuck in her nightmare wants nothing to do with Sam and rushes off. Jeremy sits down next to her and she sees him in a haze. “Kat, can you see?” He’s panting from screaming a few moments earlier. She hears soft voices and sees hazy images all terrifying. She nods and tells him, “Okay, I’ll do it.” He smiles at her and says, “Excellent.”

Duke asks Abe what he saw, “My wife when she kicked me out.” Recalling his relationship with his wife Abe asks Duke if he’s sure about Sam. Duke is sure. He realizes he’s remembering and says “oh crap.” But it’s too late. He remembers when Sam came over for scotch and they’re laughing and talking. Then the memory turns into a nightmare when Sam begins to walk, holds her glass she says “I’m not who you think I am. You’ll never really know me.” And Sam turns into Evi. Duke screams.

James and Audrey look around everyone is sitting on the grass stuck in terrifying nightmares.

ACT IV

As James asks himself questions to stay in the present like, “the grass is…green. The tree trunks are brown.” Audrey notices everyone is reeling from being terrified except a middle aged caterer woman who when they look to her starts to run. They chase after her and when they catch her and tell her it’s her that’s doing this she says she knew but doesn’t know how to stop it. Audrey says, “Luckily they do.” and takes her to Nathan. But there’s a problem, he’s stuck in the nightmare. Luckily, Audrey, by kissing him is able to get his attention long enough for him to heal the caterer helper.

Later that night white lights ordain the trees making the place look spectacular. About 30 people party at the rehearsal dinner. Nathan and Audrey happily dance together. Dwight dances with the flower girl. James and Kat dance. Vince and Dave each get a chance to dance with Audrey. The night winds down and Duke and Sam dance alone on the dance floor. “You ready to be Mrs. Crocker?” Duke asks. Sam asks, “Are you ready? You’re fear of me turning into Evi-” Duke Interrupts, “It was the trouble, it wasn’t real. I know you and I love you.” Sam smiles, “I can’t wait to marry you Duke.” She says and they kiss deeply. As they kiss the scene changes

Sam and Duke stand at the altar, on their wedding day. They kiss deeply as everyone watches for a little longer than the kiss should go on. They break and turn to their audience, as the officiate says, “I’d like to introduce you to Mr. and Mrs. Crooker.” Kat stands next to Sam, with a slutty white dress on. Jeremy holds up a thumbs up.

On the dance floor people dance in their wedding attire. Duke is looking for Sam.

A little way from the party a little girl in her frilly dress stumbles off into the forest. Through the trees she sees a group of clocked figures standing around a pentagram, jars filled with the hearts around it. The group chants and a woman appears in the center of the pentagram as if from thin air. She has long flowing brown hair, thin lips, and cheeks like Audrey’s. Once she’s appears one figure in a cloak turns to another and thrusts a knife into her gut. The woman, Willow, is scene over the shoulder of her killer, blood drips out of her mouth. The little girl screams. The killer turns around locks of her blond hair flowing. The girl stares and her mother comes for her. The women in the center says, “forget it we have to go.” The witches in a flash scatter moving faster than light itself so they blur as they run.

Back at that party they hear screaming, a woman comes up with her daughter and announces there’s been a murder. Audrey, Dwight, and Nathan rush to the scene. Duke panics because he still can’t find Sam. Vince and Dave agree to help him look just as Sam comes up behind him and asks what’s going on? Duke hugs her and asks where she was. As he squashes her in the hug she tells him she broke her shoe, “I was trying to fix it in the bathroom”. She asks again what’s going on. Duke tells her there’s been a murder. She freaks out calling out “Kat!, Kat!” She sees Kat in the crowd. She’s brushing off her dress, leaves sticking to it. “What happen?” Sam asks. Kat looks to Jeremy and waves. She bites her lip, “I had a little romp in the bushes.” “Well you seem okay,

In the forest James holds back the crowd as Dwight talks on his phone getting backup. Nathan is looking at the scene with Audrey. They see the hearts are there and know that it will probably match the ones missing. They also see that the woman has a spiral marking on her chest just below her collar bone. Audrey knows it’s some kind of ritual and is sick to her stomach about it breathing heavily. Nathan’s worried about her and tells her to talk to the little girl. Audrey goes to the little girl and asks her what she saw. James holds the crowd back as Sam comes up to the front. She calls for Audrey and Audrey goes up to her. Sam asks if there’s anything she can do. Audrey tells her to go on her honeymoon there’s nothing she can do. Sam asks if the little girl saw who it was. Audrey says they won’t know yet until we get her with a sketch artist. Vince volunteers. Audrey assures Sam and Duke not to worry to have fun on their honeymoon, this will all be here when you get back.

At the station Vince comes out of the room from talking to the little girl. He’s white, Audrey and Nathan asks what’s wrong. He assures them he made sure the girl was certain of the features and holds up the sketch of the murder, it’s Sam.

In the police car Nathan drives madly. Audrey holds her cell to her ear calling Duke. His phone goes to voicemail. Audrey and Nathan pull up to the docks just as Duke’s boat is floating away, they stop running. They missed them.

On the boat Sam looks into the mirror in something sexy, her blond hair flowing. As Sam comes out of the room Katy Perry “Dark Horse” starts to play from “Make me your Aphrodite….” Sam stands across the room from Duke who smiles at her. He kisses her deeply. Katy sings, “So you wanna play with magic, Boy you should know what you’re falling for.” Sam and Duke kiss deeply and fall on the bed. As they are making love, the sheets over them, Sam’s feet stick out of the sheets and on her lower thigh flashes a four person circular tattoo. Katy Perry sings, “A perfect storm, perfect storm Cause once you’re mine, once you’re mine, there’s no going back."
